The difference between Lye and No-Lye Relaxers

relaxer

Most relaxers contain either of these 2 active ingredients: Sodium hydroxide (Lye) or Calcium hydroxide (No lye). Lye relaxers usually come in a jar and don't require any mixing while no lye relaxers usually come in a kit with the relaxer, activator and other accessories. Both active ingredients work by breaking down the bonds of the hair. The key difference is the effect on the hair and scalp.

Lye Relaxers
Lye relaxers can be quite harsh on the scalp so if your scalp is sensitive, this may not be the best option for you. They also tend to process the hair faster which is great because it means that you don't have to leave the relaxer on as long as you would a no lye relaxer to get the same results. The major advantage of lye relaxers is the fact that it is much gentler on your hair than no lye relaxers. You hair is better able to absorb and retain moisture when you use a lye relaxer and is therefore healthier, stronger and less likely to break.

No Lye Relaxers
No lye relaxers have calcium hydroxide or guanidine hydroxide as the active ingredient. They are gentler on the scalp than lye relaxers but significantly harsher on the hair. No lye relaxers leave calcium deposits on the hair which prevents your hair from absorbing and retaining moisture properly. This leaves your hair dry and susceptible to breakage. To combat this, use a good clarifying shampoo regularly if you relax with a no lye relaxer. The clarifying shampoo will help remove the calcium buildup. However, in the process of removing the calcium deposits, it also strips and removes other nutrients from your hair so be sure to replenish by deep conditioning after clarifying.

Choosing which to use depends on the sensitivity of your scalp, how well your hair takes to relaxers, what your preferred outcome is (bone straight or texlaxed).

Tips for smooth relaxer day experience
Apply Relaxer to ONLY to new growth
Always make sure your hair is well detangled before relaxing
Always wait at least a week after washing  to relax your hair.

Never use relaxers on a damaged scalp.
Touch ups (re-touch) should only be done between a periods of six to eight weeks. The more chemicals applied to the hair, the more possibility of damage.
Carry out a strand test to determine the best relaxers for your scalp.

Help, I'm addicted to masturbation!

Here's a mail a reader sent:

Please Leye, I am a young lady who started masturbation 3years ago. I love to pleasure myself to orgasm as I only come to orgasm once in a while during sex but it is sure for me during masturbation. Now, I am addicted to masturbation and can not control the urge.  Please how do I stop or reduce the rate since I heard that it has some health benefit. Thank you.

Reply:
Well, It is true that masturbation has several health and emotional advantages, some of which are:

It helps prevent cervical infections and helps relieve urinary tract infections.
It is associated with improved cardiovascular health and lower risk of type-2 diabetes
It can help work against insomnia naturally, through hormonal and tension release.
Orgasm increases pelvic floor strength.
It Improves our mood and Relieves stress.

But like we know, too much of everything is bad. Bruising of the genital organs can occur during masturbation, particularly if the genitals are handled roughly during the act or if there is not enough lubrication. These can cause a lot of pain and can lead to serious infection if contaminated by germs.

To deal with the addiction:
Remove anything that tempts your urge to masturbate like Access to pornographic materials, Boredom, Loneliness

Find another outlet for your time and energy. Fill your life with engaging activities. The excitement of doing something different can help replace the urge to masturbate
  • Get creative. The process of turning sexual urges into creative output (called sublimation) is something on which monks and sages have relied upon for centuries. Start writing, learn to play a musical instrument, paint, draw, or do whatever else makes you feel like you're doing something productive.
  • Do sports
  • Eat healthy.
  • Find a new hobby, or cultivate a skill. Learning something that takes a while to master can refocus your brain on the delayed gratification of achieving goals instead of the instant gratification of masturbation.
  • Volunteer your time. Devote your energy to helping people who've been less fortunate than you
Be persistent and patient.
If you've tried everything and just can't seem to get your addiction under control, it might be time to tell someone else about your problem and ask for assistance. Don't feel ashamed, and remember that many people have similar problems like an addiction. Seeking help is a brave action, and most people you ask will see it as such.

If none of these work, then ask your religious leader for guidance or make an appointment with a medical professional.

Be Kind to your heart

man
The holy book says, “Guard your heart jealously, because out of it comes the good things of life.”
Medical experts agree with this golden advice. They say these words of wisdom apply literally and figuratively to how we should protect our heart from danger in our day-to-day activities.
They note that protecting your heart goes beyond avoiding heartbreak or running away from sin and Satan; and stress that a healthy lifestyle is the ultimate way to reduce one’s chances of developing heart-related diseases.

A cardiologist (heart specialist) with the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba, Dr. Jane Ajuluchukwu, says what an individual does daily would determine whether he/she would develop health complications like diabetes, stroke or kidney failure in future.
She notes that protecting your heart involves reducing your risks for cardiovascular diseases that could kill you before your time.

Doctors on WebMD.com say if you want to enjoy your pension allowances or be present at the ceremony to mark your 50th birthday and not die suddenly of a heart attack, cardiac arrest or cardiovascular diseases, some habits must go. They include the following:

Smoking
A cardiologist and medical director of the New York University Women’s Heart Programme, Nieca Goldberg, says a major cause of heart disease is smoking.
Goldberg says smoking raises blood pressure, causes blood clots, and makes it harder to exercise.
Again, the American Heart Association warns that smoking is the number one preventable cause of death in the world.
Experts warn that even though it may be one of the most difficult habits to quit, the rewards of stopping smoking are perhaps the greatest and most immediate.
“When you toss the smokes, your heart disease risk goes down within just a few days of quitting. Within a year, your risk is cut by half. After 10 years of living smoke-free, it’s as if you never smoked at all,” the scientists assure.

Ignoring that chest pain
Goldberg, who, in her book entitled, Complete Guide to Women’s Health, warns that when your heart literally aches and you don’t know why, it’s time to get it checked out.
“If you have chest pains while working, walking, or exercising, that’s a red flag. But if it happens after a heavy meal, it’s more likely to be your stomach causing trouble.
“If you feel like an elephant is sitting on your chest and you start sweating, it is an urgent matter; go to a doctor or, better still, rush to the hospital. It is a sign of heart attack.
“Heart pain can feel more like a pressure rather than actual pain. People tend to feel it in the front of their chest, with the sensation sometimes extending into the shoulders, up into the jaw, or down the left arm,” Goldberg warns.

Eating with abandon
Ajuluchukwu notes that being obese or being overweight contributes to heart disease, heart failure, and a shorter lifespan. She says careless eating, especially in the 21st century where junk foods are readily available, may be injurious to your heart.
She adds, “Aim for a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and nuts; low in saturated fat and cholesterol; and with almost no trans fats. This does not mean you need to avoid fat altogether. Fats found in fish, olives and olive oil, nuts and avocados are heart-healthy and should be eaten in moderation.”

Avoiding the hospital
If the sight of injections or drugs is what is keeping you from the hospital, you may want to have a rethink.
Goldberg says when you don’t get checked out regularly by a doctor, you might not realise if you have some of the silent heart risk factors that are hard to detect.
“Some of the most common, symptom-free cardiovascular issues are also some of the most easily treated, such as high cholesterol and high blood pressure.
“If the cost of a yearly medical check-up is holding you back, look for where they are doing free screening or tests in your community or local government. In fact, you can save a portion of your earnings for it,” She counsels.

Being a couch potato
Goldberg in her book notes that lack of physical exercise increases an individual’s risk for heart diseases.
Goldberg says, “Physical activity simply translates into living longer. Exercise helps lower blood pressure, improves cholesterol levels, encourages weight loss, benefits blood vessel function, and cuts stress, among other things.
“Even if you haven’t been active for the last 20 years, it’s never too late to make an impact with exercise. Just be sure to talk to a doctor before you start a new fitness regimen. Tell your doctor exactly what you plan to do, or ask his or her advice, if you’re looking for suggestions.”

Neglecting your expanding waistline
If your belt size is slowly getting bigger, that’s something to worry about, physicians warn.
They say that excess fat tissue in the midsection (giving you an apple-shape figure) could mean you are already developing metabolic syndrome — a group of health problems that can increase your risk of heart attack, stroke, and diabetes, through the hardening of the arteries, insulin resistance, and inflammation.
“A hefty waistline is linked to doubling your risk of heart disease,” Goldberg says. That’s good reason to redouble your efforts to get in shape through a healthy lifestyle. It’s not just about your clothes size.

Letting your blood pressure run amok
“A good way to wreck your heart is to leave your blood pressure elevated and untreated,” Goldberg notes.
She says allowing blood pressure to get out of hand makes the heart work harder and to enlarge, leading to heart failure; while it can also cause hardened arteries, thus raising your risks for heart attack, stroke, and other problems.
Physicians say even though symptoms of high blood pressure are rare, it’s relatively easy to diagnose. You can even check it yourself with a home blood pressure monitor. Diet, exercise, and medications (if needed)

Hey! smoking is not s*xy

You want to please your woman in the bedroom? Quit smoking.
Smokers tend to have a difficult time achieving and maintaining an erection as nicotine blocks the veins that help maintain an erection.

Smoking has a direct, negative effect on the sexuality of a man on every level.
Previous research has shown that long-term smokers are up to twice as likely to have impotence as non-smokers. Smoking can show blood vessel dilation, which is necessary to get an erection.

You do have to give up the stick inorder to be able to really 'stick-it-up' in the bedroom. *winks*

Plastic Surgery: Whats your take?

While a woman from Florida begs on the street for money for bigger breasts, 18-year-old Linda Perez went under the knife on Aug 12 at a local cosmetic center for a breast augmentation surgery and is yet to wake up. She is now in a hospital bed, unconscious.

In an attempt to maintain a youthful appearance, many have gone under the knife or taken a little injection here or there. Plastic surgery is fast gaining ground here in Nigeria and according to Modupe Ozolua, you can achieve your desired looks when the right hands are on deck.

Rumours has it that the high and mighty women in Nigeria who have simply refused to age have all gone under the knife. One of them recently had her birthday and it was said that she introduced a Nigerian first lady who died while undergoing the process to her doctor.

Is plastic surgery really worth it? Is it possible to predict the outcome? Can you sue your doctor if he fails to deliever on his promise?

A Plastic surgery candidate has a lot of faith in the doctor. If only we had that kind of faith in  God's existence and power, the world would have been a less judgemental place to live in.

So whats your take? Is the process worth the effort? Would you go under the knife for any reason?

Yes, Consuming too much Alcohol can lead to poor s**ual performance

S*x drive

First of all, a moderate quantity of alcohol will reduce anxiety and let people release their inhibitions. Therefore, having a drink or two during social events will help men get over their shyness and facilitate approaching women. This is especially true with strongly inhibited men who are scared of rejection or for those who experience performance anxiety.

Shyness in bed

A light change in mood from the alcohol will also relieve nervousness and leave room for freedom of sexual expression.

Limit your drinking

However, watch out how much alcohol is consumed. In general, half a gram of pure alcohol per 2.2 pounds of body weight is the maximum recommended dose because everything above that could reduce one's amorous capabilities. For example, someone weighing 165 pounds could drink half a bottle of wine before a sexual encounter without being at risk of delivering a poor performance. The amount of alcohol affecting someone's sex drive is specific to each individual. Therefore, it is important to know your limits.

Don't abuse alcohol intake

Consuming too much alcohol can lead to serious consequences. Aside from impotence and poor performance, alcohol can lead many guys to be overly aggressive toward members of the opposite sex and force them into unfavorable situations.  Abusing alcohol can cause some men to be overly aggressive and things might get out of hand.

So next time you need a drink to boost performance, never overdo it as that can ruin things.

1 in 8 women risks breast cancer in a lifetime — Biochemist

A non-governmental organisation, Initiative for Peace Building and Social Change, has expressed concerns over the rising cases of breast cancer among Nigerian women.

A biochemist and chief executive officer of the NGO, Mr. Gbenga Gbarada, noted that one in every eight women risks developing the disease in a lifetime.
Gbarada said, “Statistics reveal that breast cancer represents 12.5 per cent of cancerous deaths worldwide, making it the second leading cause of deaths relating to cancer.

“Also, 70 per cent of people in developing countries are victims of this disease, which makes breast cancer more dangerous than certain communicable diseases.”

He lamented that between 7,000 and 10,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer were diagnosed each year, while nearly 40,000 women were expected to die of the disease if drastic actions were not adopted to tackle its scourge.
Gbarada revealed that a woman’s risk of developing breast cancer increases as she gets older.

He said, “Ageing is a fundamental factor for the development of cancer. The incidence of cancer rises dramatically with age, most likely due to a build-up of risks for specific cancers that increase with age.

“The overall risk accumulation is combined with the tendency for cellular repair mechanisms to be less effective as a person grows older.”

He added that other factors that could also increase a woman’s risk of developing breast cancer were inherited changes in certain genes, a family history of the disease, having dense breasts, and beginning menstrual period before the age of 12.

“Others include late menopause after age 55, having a first full-term pregnancy after age 30, never having been pregnant, obesity after menopause and alcohol use,” Gbarada said.

Also speaking on the incidence of cervical cancer, the CEO/MD of Optimal Cancer Foundation, Dr. Femi Olaleye, noted that one in every 12 women is at the risk of having cervical cancer due to the growth of the body cells.

He said, “One in every 12 women is at the risk of developing cervical cancer owing to generational causes; while every sexually active woman stands the
high risk of developing the disease.”

Home remedies for stretch marks

stretch marks photo: stretch marks alissasbirth033.jpg
Stretch marks are not a medical cause for concern, but they can be unsightly and lead to embarrassment. Although there are a number of treatments for stretch marks, including laser removal, dermabrasion, and retinoid creams, these can be prohibitively expensive and are not altogether natural.

Fortunately, there are also a number of home remedies for stretch marks, which can deal with the scars in a less aggressive manner. Let’s take a look at the best of those remedies now.

Tea tree oil
Due to its anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, and antibiotic properties, tea tree oil is a popular home remedy for a number of ailments. For the best results, apply tea tree oil to the affected areas every night. Although it has a strong medicinal smell, bear with it and you’ll see a noticeable difference in your stretch marks.

Aloe vera
Apply the aloe vera gel directly to the affected area every morning. Allow it to soak into the skin until it completely dries. Although it won’t completely get rid of stretch marks, it will help a great deal.

Cocoa butter
Cocoa butter is used for a wide range of skin treatments, including anti-wrinkling, anti-ageing, and yes, stretch marks. Cocoa butter works by moisturising your skin, increasing circulation, and improving its natural elasticity. To use the butter most effectively, apply to the affected area at least twice a day.

Olive oil
Effective use of olive in the treatment of stretch marks includes rubbing warm olive oil on the affected areas and consuming an appropriate quantity for your diet. In addition to aiding discoloration, olive oil will help moisturise your skin, thereby keeping it smooth and healthy.

Apricot scrub: A good apricot scrub exfoliates dead and damaged skin tissues found in stretch marks. It also helps tone and firm up the skin. It helps to fade out stretch marks.

With a little patience, the marks will gradually disapppear. Hope this is helpful?

Less than 2,000 radiographers serve 170m Nigerians

Experts have decried what they termed “acute shortage” of radiographers in Nigeria, as the country, with an estimated population of about 170 million, is said to have less than 2,000 radiographers.

A member of the Radiographers Registration Board of Nigeria, Mr. Udoh Sunday, in an interview with journalists in Ilorin on Saturday, said this was responsible for the high incidence of quackery.
He noted that the situation not only affects patients’ lives, it also affects the radiography profession in a negative way.

“What gives us much concern today is our small population as professionals, compared with the population of Nigeria. In all, we are about 2,000, and this number includes those who have travelled abroad in search of better opportunities

Who is the greatest Nigerian ever?

Once a Nigerian is told to mention who his or her greatest Nigerian is, the name that usually pops up is one of the three founding fathers: Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, former Premier of Eastern Nigeria and first President of Nigeria; Sir Ahmadu Bello, former Premier of Northern Nigeria; and Chief Obafemi Awolowo, former Premier of Western Nigeria. These three men were seen as the three pillars that held Nigeria together. They achieved a lot, especially for their regions, and have remained evergreen in the minds of many Nigerians. Because of the achievements they recorded in their regions, they are seen as demi-gods by their people, and almost worshipped. It is seen as sacrilegious to say any negative thing about them, no matter how true such a statement is.

However, some believe that their action and inaction contributed a lot in sowing the seed of ethnic and religious discord that has continued to work against the unity of Nigeria. This is because the regional type of politics in existence then led them to focus more on their respective regions to the detriment of other regions. The downside of that is that even though they are venerated in their respective regions, they are either hated passionately outside their regions or treated with indifference. That makes it impossible for me to accept any of them as the greatest Nigerian ever.

Another figure that comes to mind is Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, who led the Republic of Biafra, which seceded from Nigeria in 1967. Among the Igbo, many rank Ojukwu higher than Azikiwe because he is seen as a man who stood for them against annihilation from Nigeria and restored their dignity, not withstanding that they lost that war. Anybody who says anything against him is seen as also making sacrilegious statements.

Then, there are the two literary icons: Prof Chinua Achebe and Prof. Wole Soyinka. Achebe is Nigeria’s and Africa’s highest-selling author. His novel, Things Fall Apart, changed the global perception of Africa as a land of savages and culture-less people. Soyinka is Africa’s first winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature. He has brought international acclaim for Nigeria through his books. He has also fought against military dictatorship, mis-governance and corruption.  Both of them are top contenders for that position, but for me there is still a man that ranks above them.

Could it be MKO Abiola, Ibrahim Babangida, Olusegun Obasanjo or not listed in the right up?
Who would you vote the greatest Nigerian that ever lived with reasons please?

I’ll keep helping people to participate in BBA- Denrele

INTERNET
Popular television presenter, Denrele Edun, has vowed to keep on providing assistance to fellow Nigerians who want to participate in the Big Brother Africa reality TV show in the future.
Known to his fans as Denrele, he said this in response to those who severely criticised him for his presumed role in the appearance of Nigeria’s controversial female representative in the 2013 BBA show, Beverly Osu.

Denrele said Beverly’s failure to emerge winner of the show, which ended on Sunday, and to take home the $300, 000 star prize, would not deter her from succeeding in life.

Beverly was the first housemate to be evicted from the grand finale of the show. She was followed by fellow compatriot, Melvin Oduah, the Ghanaian housemate, Elikem and Zambian representative, Cleo, in quick succession. The Namibian housemate, Dillish, eventually emerged the winner of the 2013 show.

But Denrele, who said on Twitter that he watched the grand finale of the show on TV in Nigeria after he missed his flight to South Africa on Saturday night, has declared that he will not stop helping people to  “achieve their dreams.’’
He lamented that he had been “taking the heat” for Beverly and pledged to keep supporting her in spite of the criticism.
The presenter said he was not angry with those who had been calling him names, adding that the BBA chase had already put Beverly in the limelight.

In a series of tweets, he said, “Beverly Osu is already a superstar! I have been taking the heat for my girl and I’m standing solidly behind her! Africa, get ready! Work begins on building Brand Beverly. Plans are already in top gear and with the right moves in place, our agenda is on course.

“Beverly’s exit from #BBATheChase was the best ever. I’m too strong-willed and thick-skinned to be shaken! And so shall it be for my girl. I’ve been having a tough time in this industry since 1995 and I’m still going strong!

“And I won’t stop helping people achieve their dreams! Call us all the names in the world. No one can kill our shine! Before una talk, find person wey go believe in una to give you leverage! I’m not angry; never will be. Anger is negative and I’m too positive for all that!

Have you ever been hit badly by words spoken to you?

In the news today, a young lady killed herself because of her mother's uncomplimentary remarks. A teenager also flew in the tyre hole of an Arik plane from Benin to Lagos on Saturday morning, thinking he was on a US-bound flight to escape his parent's maltreatment.

Have you ever been spoken to in a way that made you feel bad?  How did you react? Did you do things you wouldn't do if the incidence happens again?

By their Hair..........

http://www.genevieveng.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/32.jpg

Yes o.....by their hair, We shall Know them. Here are beautiful women flaunting their natural hair. I actually wanted to make the post on celebrities with natural hair but i searched google tire o.

Ever wonder why some ladies can't go out without their wigs or are uncomfortable by the mere presence of a guy in the salon?

Whether natural or artificial, good hair stands you out in a crowd. But lets endeavor to care for the natural as we shower attention on the artificial.

You can send your natural hair picture to my mail box and We'll make it our beauty of the day

Boy who hid in Arik's plane tyre hole thought plane was US-bound

Stowaway: Pix 1: A teenage boy, Daniel Ihekina, who hid in the tyre hole of Arik Air flying from Benin to Lagos. Pix 2: The boy being led away by security agents.
THE teenage stowaway, Daniel Ihekina, who was arrested at the Lagos Airport after flying in the tyre hole of an Arik plane from Benin to Lagos on Saturday morning, thought he was on a US-bound flight.

A source at the Benin Airport who disclosed this said the boy’s parents had already departed for Lagos in search of the stowaway.
The airport source, who did not want his name in print said, “From what we heard, the boy said he was being maltreated and tried to escape from his parents. He thought he was on his way to the US.

“The parents have travelled to Lagos by road, to get him back.”
Meanwhile, investigations conducted by one of our correspondents in Lagos revealed that the boy had been handed over to the operatives of the State Security Services for further investigation.

The FAAN spokesman said the nature and circumstances surrounding the crime informed the agency decision to hand over the stowaway to the SSS operatives.

However, FAAN has also continued to trade blame with Arik Air over the Benin incident.
The agency, in a statement on Sunday, said it read with “great dismay the statement released by Arik Airlines about the stowaway found on board Arik’s flight 544 from Benin to Lagos on Saturday 24 August, 2013.”

So what kind of maltreatment will make a teenage boy conceive the idea of escaping from his parents in an airplane tire hole?

In the news today was also the suicide of the young lady who killed herself over her mothers uncomplimentary remarks. Parents, please make una thread cautiously o. Sofly, sofly, abeg.

Yes, Foreign Accent Syndrome is a weird medical condition

After surviving a stroke or event that results in traumatic brain injury, a very small number of people find themselves on the other side of the event speaking with a strong foreign accent. While it sounds made-up, foreign accent syndrome (FAS) is very real.

FAS is caused by damage to portions of the brain that affect speech and the coordination of the muscles used when speaking. The damage changes the way a person pronounces vowels and consonants, shifts speech rhythm and positions the tongue differently during speech. It wouldn't make you bilingual, but it would affect your speech to a degree that it sounds like that of a different country, or a region within your own country.

One misperception of this bizarre medical condition is that the affected person speaks in a different language or in a specific accent. It's not so much that you've adopted an accent, but rather that you've been forced to produce speech that sounds very similar to a pre-existing dialect. A person with FAS may seem to speak with traces of several different accents, and listeners may pick out the accent they're most familiar with.

While no known cure exists, speech therapy produces some improvements for those with FAS.

Woman commits suicide over mother’s uncomplimentary remarks

A 21-year-old  fashion designer, simply identified as Kemi, committed suicide after an alleged derogatory comment from her mother, identified as Mummy Kemi, in  Isale Asa Ilorin, Kwara State.

According to sources, Kemi lived with her parents till the time of her death and was said to have committed suicide with locally-made rat poison traditionally known as sole lasan after a disagreement with her mother.
In the course of the quarrel, Mummy Kemi was reported to have called her daughter a complete failure and a disgrace to the family.

The lady, who was said to have been angered over her mother’s uncomplimentary comment, went into her room.

It was said that her mother, after the quarrel, went to her grinding machine shop which was nearby.

The source said, “When Mummy Kemi came in about 30 minutes later, she saw that kemi was writhing in pains. She was said to have raised the alarm.”

It was learnt that suspecting that the lady had taken some poison, sympathisers rushed her to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

The hospital officials were said to have advised them to go to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital.

She, however, died before she could be taken to the hospital. The state command’s Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Olufemi Fabode, could not be reached as his telephone number indicated that his number was not available.

Here's how sick sperm hurts your wife

Funny Sperm Illustrations
Has your wife experienced repeated miscarriages, especially within the first three months of pregnancy and you are still trying to achieve a pregnancy that she could carry to term?

As a man, if you answer an emphatic ‘yes’ to this question, it may be time to focus on yourself because, experts say, the repeated miscarriages — medically known as abortion — may be due to the fact that your sperm is defective. If this is the case, you need medical attention; otherwise, your desire to have a baby may be a mirage, especially if you are over 40 years of age.

Generally, physicians say between 20 and 30 per cent of all women spot, bleed or suffer cramps during their first 12 weeks of pregnancy, while about 10 per cent miscarry. Gynaecologists warn that a good number of women miscarry unknowingly, thinking that their period was late or heavy.

Though a woman may suffer miscarriage for many reasons, gynaecologists say the commonest reason for a first-trimester miscarriage is a genetic defect in the embryo. Experts say about three in every five early miscarriages are thought to be connected to foetal abnormality, which may have been as a result of abnormality with the woman’s egg or the man’s sperm.

The Medical Director of Nordica Fertility Centre, Dr. Abayomi Ajayi, says the abnormality may be a combination of the problem with the man and the woman. He describes such miscarriages as the nature’s way of preventing the birth of a baby with a birth defect.

This genetic error is a random event which happens by chance, experts say; and it occurs because a genetically abnormal egg or sperm gets fertilised.
Having a miscarriage is an unpalatable experience; but when it happens repeatedly, it’s bound to have psychological and emotional effects on, not just the woman but her husband also. The situation is even worse if the couple has been trying for a child.

Ajayi says that though every woman has some chromosomally abnormal eggs and every man produces some chromosomally abnormal sperm, when a man has high volume of abnormal sperm, his wife may continue to experience miscarriages even if she has the best eggs in town.

“The quality of the man’s sperm can sometimes be the cause of recurrent miscarriages,” Ajayi warns; “hence the advice for men to do a sperm test to be sure.”

Land grabbers beat architect to death over N5,000

Kiyesola
When Eniola Kiyesola left home for work on August 18, 2013, he bade his wife and three children farewell, saying he would return after the day’s work.
This was, however, not to be as the 36-year-old man was beaten to death by land grabbers few hours after he left his house.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Kiyesola had gone to a construction site to supervise an ongoing work when about five land grabbers stormed the site.
The culprits were said to have demanded N5, 000 from Kiyesola, adding that if he did not pay them, they would prevent labourers from working.
A relative of the deceased, Mr Sola Solebo, said, “On that day, Kiyesola went to supervise construction at the site.

“After sometime, about five hoodlums from Omo Ebi Bagidan Village, led by one Babu and Kazeem, stormed the site and demanded money.
“Kiyesola reminded them that the owner of the property had given them money when the foundation of the building was being laid.

“The land grabbers then demanded N5, 000 so that they would leave. However, Kiyesola told them that he could not give them any money and told them to come back when the owner of the property was around.

“There was an exchange of words and the hoodlums picked up iron rods and beat him up.”
A labourer, Yusuf Olatundun, who claimed to be an eyewitness, said the culprits beat Kiyesola for over an hour.
Olatundun, a bricklayer, said, “About 15 of us were working on the site when those land grabbers came. The land grabbers said they had an axe to grind with the architect. Some of us rushed to Ijede Police Division to report the matter.

“After beating Kiyesola for over an hour, he collapsed. When he became unconscious, the guys fled. When the police arrived we rushed Kiyesola to General Hospital, Ijede where he was confirmed dead.”

Girl with Brain-eating amoeba infection makes progress

Kali Hardig
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — A 12-year-old Arkansas girl who has been battling a rare and often-fatal infection caused by a brain-eating amoeba is now able to say a few words.

Kali Hardig was diagnosed last month with an infection caused by an amoeba called Naegleria fowleri.
There were 128 such infections reported in the United States between 1962 and 2012, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Before Kali, doctors could only point to one known survivor in the U.S. and another in Mexico.

So it's remarkable that Kali is alive, let alone able to say anything.
"She's not speaking normal, but she is doing wonderful trying to pronounce stuff," Kali's mother, Traci Hardig, said Wednesday. "She can say 'yes' and 'no.'" She's also been able to say "Hi mama," ''daddy" and "nanny."
Health officials believe Kali got sick after a trip to a now-shuttered Arkansas water park that features a sandy-bottomed lake.

Naegleria fowleri (pronounced nuh-GLEER'-ee-uh FOW'-lur-ee) often is found in warm bodies of freshwater, such as lakes, rivers and hot springs. The amoeba typically enters the body through the nose as people are swimming or diving. It can then travel to the brain, causing a devastating infection called primary amebic meningoencephalitis, or PAM.
That's what Kali has been battling.

Initial symptoms usually start within one to seven days and may include headache, fever, nausea and vomiting. The disease progresses rapidly, and other symptoms can include stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, seizures and hallucinations.
Moreover, the infection destroys brain tissue and can cause brain swelling and death.

Doctors say Kali's success is due in large part to experimental treatment and early detection and diagnosis.
Traci Hardig brought Kali (pronounced KAY'-lee) to Arkansas Children's Hospital with a nasty fever on July 19.
Doctors cooled Kali's body down to try to reduce the swelling, and they won clearance to treat her with a breast-cancer drug.
Now, tests show no sign of the parasite in her system.

"It's still a concern that she could certainly have some deficits long-term and not function entirely as she would have if this had never happened," one of her doctors, Dr. Vikki Stefans, said.

But, for now, Kali is making progress.
"She's up and participating in all her therapy," Stefans said. "She's saying more, and things are basically looking good."
Kali also is able to take a few steps with help at the hospital.
"She'll walk across the room to her wheelchair," Traci Hardig said. "It's a real slow walk ... but we're really proud of her."
Kali will likely stay at the hospital for at least a few more weeks, and she'll be dealing with therapy for months.

But with support from her family and doctors, she's expected to do well.
"She's got half the world praying for her, too, which can't hurt," Stefans said.
